Paul McCarthy, mixed media, 2000

The American artist Paul McCarthy shows solemn, obscene and macabre scenes in a theatrical way. Fairy tale characters and children’s heroes become psychopathic characters from horror films with hallucinatory, sexual excesses. His ominous sets are shocking scenes with which he questions the supposedly flawless society. McCarthy is the artist of controversy full of humor and provocation.

‘Heidi drinks’ is based on a picture of Heidi Fleiss, former “Hollywood Madam” from luxury prostitution. In previous work he already referred to the main character, Heidi, from the well-known youth novels, whom he deprived of her childlike innocence. Here we see an adult Heidi addicted to drugs and alcohol, lost in our consumer society, as if it were the same character.
