Gao Brothers, bronze, 2009

Gao Zhen en Gao Qiang represent a generation that is no longer willing to follow the Mao cult. They are active as resistance fighters in the art, fighting for their freedom of speech. With their knowledge of the Western culture and history, they bring, along with other dissidents, innovation in the universal art history.

‘The Execution of Christ’ demonstrates the clash between Mao (China) and Christ (the West), between cruelty and innocence, between communist oppression and the martyr of freedom. Based on the composition of Manet’s Execution of Emperor Maximilian, they created a global masterpiece. The emotional tension of this artwork expresses criticism, but also offers an opportunity of awareness and forgiveness.
