The American Robert Rauschenberg, one of the important founders of pop art, already became known in the 1950s. Using different techniques and with an eye for everyday objects, he created assemblages and collages. His themes were often absurd and with a portion of humour. On the other hand, his oeuvre was critical of numerous events of his time in the field of politics, war, consumption, ecology,…

The monumental work ‘Altered image’ is based on a photo taken by the Italian photographer Gianfranco Gorgoni. It was commissioned by the famous art patron and gallery owner Leo Castelli. The artist floats in a swimming pool designed by Le Corbusier and at the top there are 2 strips with historical images, the lower of which is painted over with a colour band. The folds in the loosely hung canvas imitate ‘the movement’ of the wavy water and bring extra life to the work.
